Private Mentoring · Steven Bettles

Sometimes a conversation changes the question.

There are times when another perspective helps us recognise what we have been unable to see clearly for ourselves.

My mentoring offers a thoughtful, private conversation in which we can examine a question, a transition or a recurring pattern without surrendering your responsibility for what comes next.

01 / Why I mentor

A conversation with purpose.

Understanding yourself more clearly can change how you participate in life.

Across business, invention, relationships and metaphysical enquiry, I have repeatedly seen the importance of how people interpret a situation. Two individuals may face similar circumstances and yet respond in entirely different ways.

Often, the problem is not an absence of intelligence or effort. It is that our assumptions, expectations or emotional responses have become difficult to recognise from within the experience itself.

I bring practical experience and a philosophical perspective to these conversations. My interest is not in imposing a belief system, diagnosing someone or prescribing a life direction. It is in exploring what is happening, what it may mean and which responses are worth considering.

A good conversation can be useful precisely because it leaves you better able to decide for yourself.

02 / Areas we might explore

Different circumstances. A more considered response.

Mentoring is not confined to one type of problem. These are examples of enquiries that may benefit from a personal conversation.

01 / CHANGE

Transitions and uncertainty

When a familiar role, relationship or direction is changing and the next decision deserves careful consideration.

02 / PATTERNS

Recurring responses

When you recognise a reaction that keeps appearing and want to investigate what lies behind it.

03 / RELATIONSHIPS

Self and others

Understanding the difference between your own responsibility, another person's autonomy and the relationship you share.

04 / DIRECTION

Decisions and priorities

Examining competing demands, values and assumptions before choosing how to proceed.

05 / CONSCIOUSNESS

Awareness and presence

Exploring the difference between observing your experience and becoming absorbed in every interpretation.

06 / MEANING

Metaphysical enquiry

Reflecting on significant experiences, synchronicity and personal meaning without being required to accept one explanation.

03 / How I approach mentoring

Observe. Understand. Choose.

These are not rigid stages or a formula. They describe the discipline I bring to an enquiry: distinguishing what is happening from how it is interpreted, and considering what constitutes an appropriate next step.

01 / OBSERVATION

Clarify the situation

We explore what you are actually experiencing, what is known and what may be assumed.

02 / DISCERNMENT

Examine the relationship

We consider patterns of thought, feeling, behaviour and perspective, including the wider consequences for others.

03 / PARTICIPATION

Consider conscious action

You decide which, if any, changes or actions are appropriate. The responsibility remains yours.

04 / An important distinction

Mentoring is a dialogue, not a transfer of authority.

I value independent thinking. I will challenge an assumption when it deserves scrutiny, including my own, and I welcome disagreement that helps clarify the question.

05 / Common questions

A few things worth knowing first.

Do I need to be familiar with Syncronicia?

No. We can begin with the question you bring. Familiarity with my book or the philosophy may provide shared language, but it is not a requirement.

Will you tell me what I should do?

I may offer observations, challenge a premise or propose a way of examining a situation. Decisions about your life remain yours.

Is mentoring the same as the School of Coherence?

No. The School provides a structured educational pathway. Mentoring is an individual conversation shaped by the particular enquiry you wish to explore.

How are sessions arranged and priced?

Session availability, format, duration and fees are confirmed privately in response to your enquiry. No booking or payment is taken through this page.

06 / Make an enquiry

Tell me what you would like to explore.

You need not provide a long personal history. A brief outline of the question or area of enquiry is enough to begin.

From there, we can determine whether a mentoring conversation is appropriate and discuss the practical arrangements.

A personal invitation

Greater clarity begins with an honest enquiry.

You may find your next step through reflection, the book, Syncronicia or a personal conversation. The right starting point is the one that serves your circumstances rather than someone else's expectations.
